What is GPA:
GPA full form is “grade point average”. It is a numerical value of your academic performance. It is a record of your yearly performance as a high school student. You can calculate GPA by dividing the total grade points earned by the total number of classes. The basic formula for GPA calculation is;
(Total Grade Points) ÷ (Number of Classes) = GPA
There are two types of GPA in high school.
Unweighted GPA:
In unweighted GPA, the difficulty level of your courses is not considered. All of the courses are given equal weightage. Unweighted GPA has the traditional 4.0 scale. In unweighted GPA, an A is equivalent to 4 points, B is 3 points, C is 2 points, D is 1 point, and F has no point value.
Weighted GPA:
In weighted GPA, the difficulty of your courses is taken into consideration. It gives additional weightage to honors, AP (advanced placement) and IB (international Baccalaureate) classes. If you’re taking honors classes, AP level curriculum or IB classes. Your GPA will be weighted GPA and your total grade points will be higher. In it, an A is worth 5 points, B is worth 4 points, C is worth 3 points, D is worth 2 points, and F has no point value. So taking AP, honor and IB courses can boost your GPA and improve your class ranking.
A graph of weighted and unweighted GPA is given below:
Grade Type | Regular Courses (Unweighted GPA) | AP, IB and Honors Courses (Weighted GPA) |
A | 4 | 5 |
B | 3 | 4 |
C | 2 | 3 |
D | 1 | 2 |
F | 0 | 0 |
How To Calculate Unweighted GPA:
If you want to find out your unweighted GPA, you can follow the following steps;
- Convert each letter grade to its corresponding points (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0).
- Sum up all the grade points.
- Divide the sum of grade points by the amount of class credits taken.
- You will get your weighted GPA.
Example:
3.3 + 4.0 + 3.7 + 3.0 + 3.7 = 17.7 (sum of grade points)
Amount of classes= 5
17.7 ÷ 5 = 3.54 unweighted GPA
How To Calculate Weighted GPA:
To find out your weighted high school GPA, follow these steps:
- You should make a list of all of your classes.
- You should make a list of the grades you received in them.
- Then give point values to your grades: A = 4 points, B = 3 points, C = 2 points, D = 1 point, and F = 0 points for ordinary courses.
- To give point values to Advanced Placement (AP), IB or Honors courses, assign A = 5 points, B = 4 points, C = 3 points, D = 2 points, and F = 0 points.
- Then add the points from your grades.
- Now count the number of courses on your list.
- To get your weighted GPA, divide the total points by the number of courses.
Try CGPA To Percentage Calculator.
Example:
3.3 + 5.0 + 3.7 + 3.0 + 3.7 = 18.7 ( sum of grade points)
Number of courses= 5
18.7 ÷ 5 = 3.74 weighted GPA
