What is CGPA?:

The term CGPA stands for “cumulative grade point average.”  CGPA is the academic record of your all semester at the end of your degree. So CGPA portrays your overall performance in a specific degree program. CGPA actually shows your academic performance in numerical form. Different types of CGPA scales are in use. The most common one is 4 or 10 CGPA scale. You can calculate your CGPA by dividing the sum of GPA of all semesters by the total number of semesters. Do it. And you will have your GPA in your front.

Example:

Let us consider there are 8 semesters in your degree program. And you have completed your degree with the following grades:

Semester 17
Semester 26.5
Semester 36
Semester 46.5
Semester 56
Semester 66.5
Semester 77
Semester 87.5

Then your CGPA will be;

CGPA = Total GPA of all semesters / the numbers of all semesters

CGPA = 7+6.5+6+6.5+6+6.5+7+7.5 / 8

CGPA = 53 / 8

CGPA = 6.625.

So your CGPA will be 6.625 on a scale of 10 in your whole degree.

What is GPA?

The full form of GPA is grades points average. GPA is a widely used method for students’ assessment. In GPA, the academic performance of a student is shown in numerical form. Different types of numerical standards are used for GPA calculations. Usually it is in the form of 4 GPA or 10 GPA. GPA is used at high schools, colleges and universities. Your GPA shows your performance in a specific semester or a year. It is an academic record. You can calculate your GPA by dividing the total credits earned by the total number of subjects.

Example:

Let’s suppose that you have completed your first semester. And you took five courses this semester. These courses were

  1. Geography
  2. Physics
  3. English
  4. History
  5. Chemistry

You took these 5 subjects. And then you received the following grades and credits for each course;

Subject Credits and Credit Hours
Geography 4 (4 credits)
Physics 3.5 (3 credits)
English 3.7 (4 credits)
History3.3 (3 credits)
Chemistry 4 (4 credits)

Now you can easily calculate your GPA by following the above formula;

GPA = Total Credits / Total subjects

GPA = 4+3.5+ 3.7+3.3+4 / 5

GPA = 18.5 / 5 = 3.7

So your GPA will be 3.7 out of 4 in this semester.
